Never Been So Fearful of an Election As I Am This Year

Real people. Real letters. Real problems. No solutions.

Politics these days have become so divided and divisive that it’s become the norm to view the other side of the aisle as “the enemy”. People are being told to “pick a side” and that there’s no room for middle ground. We here at Phetasy believe that there are a lot more people in the middle than politicians and the media would have us believe.

We’re collecting stories from the ever growing number of people who are finding themselves Politically Homeless and posting them here on Substack. If you have moved from conservative to liberal, or liberal to conservative, if you feel you’ve stayed in the same place and your party has swerved drastically away from you, if you had a moment that awakened you to the insanity and hypocrisy on both sides, if you keep your mouth shut anytime a political topic comes up because you’re afraid your opinion will cause you to lose friends or your job, you’re not as alone as you might think.

Our goal is to shine a light on people’s earnest, individual experiences and show them they’re not alone.

Letter 84:

March 28th 2024

I live in a small rural town in central Illinois. It’s the town I grew up in. I have a BS in Broadcast Journalism that I have never used. That is a whole other issue.  Happily married with 3 wonderful children - one in the work force, one in grad school and my youngest just finishing her first year at a SEC school.

I grew up in the Christian church and my faith is extremely important to me. Do I attend weekly church? No…..I do my own Bible Study and worship on my own My son does….my two daughters don't. My kids were exposed to the ugly side of church politics at an early age when they saw our church run out a wonderful minister because his family didn’t fit the mold of how they thought his family should be. In the meantime, they supported a youth minister that is a convicted pedophile because his family founded the church.

I have not voted for either of the 2 parties since 2008 when I voted for John McCain. Since then, I have written in candidates or just not voted top of the ticket. I find Trump a narcissistic blowhard who has never been told no because he’s rich.  Biden….I just don’t have the words. I want someone who will actually be alive to see the consequences of their decisions. I want someone that inspires and challenges the country to be better. Neither of these two have that in them.

Both sides and their incessant pandering to their fringes are ruining the country. Moderate people are left out in the cold. Abortion means nothing to me. Covid accountability for what my children were put through is top of my concerns. There will never be any with either Trump and Biden - it would mean admitting fault. If there is no accountability, it will happen again.

The smug elitism from those on the left is unbearable, as is the Trump is God movement from the far right. I live in the fly over part of my own state….Illinois is a microcosm of the nation. One corner of the state dictates everything that affects the state. Look at an electoral map of the state from 2022. It shows why the electoral college is important for the nation.

I have never been so fearful of an election as I am this year. I am terrified for the world in which my children are trying to make their way. Right now, I don’t see anyone that will be capable of turning things around. I am politically homeless without even a cardboard box to call my own.

Sincerely,

Politically Homeless
