Won't Enjoy Voting For Trump

Real people. Real letters. Real problems. No solutions.
9

Politics these days have become so divided and divisive that it’s become the norm to view the other side of the aisle as “the enemy”. People are being told to “pick a side” and that there’s no room for middle ground. We here at Phetasy believe that there are a lot more people in the middle than politicians and the media would have us believe.

We’re collecting stories from the ever growing number of people who are finding themselves Politically Homeless and posting them here on Substack. If you have moved from conservative to liberal, or liberal to conservative, if you feel you’ve stayed in the same place and your party has swerved drastically away from you, if you had a moment that awakened you to the insanity and hypocrisy on both sides, if you keep your mouth shut anytime a political topic comes up because you’re afraid your opinion will cause you to lose friends or your job, you’re not as alone as you might think.

Our goal is to shine a light on people’s earnest, individual experiences and show them they’re not alone.

Letter 93:

May 29, 2024

Dear Bridget,

I am in my late 60s and will be voting for Trump this fall. That one sentence will create a negative picture in the minds of many of your readers, especially the most virulent Boomer-haters among them, but I can't do anything about that. No one is interested in nuance anymore. (And I'm not a well-off Boomer whose mindset is "I've got mine," by the way.)

I won't enjoy voting for Trump; when he ran in 2016 he was not my choice in the primary. Both times it's been a 'hold my nose and do it' exercise. But voting for RFK, Jr. – something I would like to do, for a lot of reasons – is only helping Biden, and I absolutely refuse to do that. As much as it is enticing to think of Kennedy winning, he won't. He is a spoiler candidate and that's that, and I think him spoiling Biden's chances is better than spoiling Trump's.

A liberal friend whom I admire and like, but who is not particularly well informed, asked me how evangelicals could justify voting for Trump (I am not an evangelical, by the way; I think it was a "talking point" question he had picked up from his usual sources on TV, or like-minded friends.)

He seemed surprised when I explained that while evangelicals may deplore Trump's multiple marriages and personal style, and the alleged affairs and so on, they understand how important the first amendment actually is. Biden, currently and as Barack Obama's vice president, routinely undermined this principle (look up Jack the cake baker and the Little Sisters of the Poor, if you need a couple of examples.)

Trump is much more likely to not attack that freedom by using government resources (our tax money) to pursue lawfare in the attempt to bankrupt and silence religious dissident.

We have many pressing issues. The debt is primary among them. But nothing can overstate the importance of insisting on exercising our rights that are guaranteed under the Bill of Rights. (Look up Doug Mackey and tell me the right to free speech isn't under full-fledged assault.)

People decry the "voting for the least worst option" mentality, but it is also the only practical course of action.

This doesn't even touch the cost of living issues we are all dealing with. (There is a reason Trump is garnering unprecedented levels of support among male,  working classes minorities.) He is a boor, I totally get that, but most of us regular people were a lot better off when he was president than we are now. And he doesn't have obvious dementia. That's a plus, don't you think?

Sincerely,

Politically Homeless
