This was a great episode! As a parent of an eccentric teenager who likes to follow all the latest internet trends like gender ideology, etc, I have been wrestling with raising kids in the social media era. I recently had to fire her therapist after she used the whole social justice script on me when I had too many questions about gender ideology.
Long story short, I’m noticing that this same group of kids are now going no contact with their parents unless they completely validate every fringe idea they have. If you go on any social media platform you’ll see all these posts from random people (mostly young) talking about how wonderful and empowering it is to go no contact with their parents who don’t validate them. I’m sure some of these kids have legit gripes, but if my daughter is any barometer of what’s happening, then I’m willing to bet that 75% of these kids have never known a day of abuse in their lives. What I would love to know is if this is just a passing trend or something darker?
I like having access to self help therapy stuff, and it can be really helpful, but things are starting to look a lot like the days of the repressed memory scandal and satanic panic. I want to be able to teach my daughter the difference between self help and mass psychosis before she gets trapped in a murder cult but, unfortunately, she joined the “no contact” brigade after I fired the therapist.
Has anyone else noticed or experienced this new trend, or am I just being conspiratorial?
Interesting guest! Enjoyed the conversation muchly. Sure wish my grandchildren could have the kind of outdoorsy, free-range childhood I had. Sigh.
