Yes, slavery (and the way we treated Native Americans) are shameful parts of our history. But they are not what make us different ... they are what make us exactly the same as all people of all time throughout history.
What makes us different is the aspiration to be something better. The fact that we don't always live up to those aspirations should not be what defines us.
