Tinfoil Hats are Back, Tucker loves Qatar, Smart Fridges are Bad for Schizophrenia, the Crusades were Badass, America has a Pill Problem and What are We Gonna Do About it, REAL WORLD to the Dumpster
Yeah it's a really good film which happens to be set at Christmas. But definitely qualifies because of the themes of belonging, community and redemption.
"Christmas Evil" (It's original title: "You Better Watch Out") is a true cult classic that filmmaker/iconoclast John Waters has been praising as his favourite Christmas movie. And seriously, this one is a very ambitious production that is loaded with dark comedy and a very compelling character study. What happens when a sad sack of a middle manager for a toy company with an intense fixation on Santa Claus gradually goes mad in an amoral, complicated world and finds his purpose believing he really is Saint Nick?
There are much higher stakes and food for thought since this anti-hero holds a sincere and severe morality of rewarding the good kids and adults and punishing the bad ones (Don't worry, he just gives the local "bad" kids coal for picking their nose and reading Hustler magazine, however, he dispenses far more disturbing justice on adults he deems "naughty"). He is the original Bad Santa. If you appreciate the 2003 dark comedy with Billy Bob Thornton, I highly recommend taking a chance on "Christmas Evil" this holiday season.
A few other Christmas movies that deserve more love are "Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point" (It's going to be a real Christmas classic within the coming years, I assure you), "Millions," "Christmas, Again," "The Baltimorons" (Released just this month!), "White Reindeer," "Inside" (2007, Not for the Squeamish!), "In Bruges," "Eileen," "Better Watch Out," "Carol," "Arthur Christmas," and "Mousehunt".
I realize it's not exactly underrated, but "Gremlins" deserves a shout out here.
And kudos to Kevin Ryan and his comprehensive list including "The Ref" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"!
Please forgive the self-promotion, but my short horror movie "Socket" has a very memorable Christmas scene!

TRADING goddamn PLACES!!!!
“It was a stone groove my man…”
"Yeah yeah yeah get the fuck out."
I just watched *Fat Man* and Mel Gibson is great as usual.
I had that on my list but was hesitant. There's just a bit too many "Santa goes Military" movies lately, but I'll bump it up on your recommendation.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
The Thin Man is not underrated as a movie, but it is underrated as a Christmas movie.
