I was politically homeless but we have ReformUK here now so now I’m a far right racist official(according to the extreme left)

I completely relate! I'm actually more on the left but apparently wanting an inquiry into the rape gangs, wanting to reduce immigration or fearing the rise of sectarianism and extremism in the U.K puts you in the far right category! Bonkers!

There are enormous number of what Nixon called "the silent majority" and they are busy working, raising families, etc. They don't spend time rage commenting/Tweeting. It's noise, not the signal. All the Internet has done has made writing "letters to the editor"(Waugh in his hilarous novel Scoop remarked "people who wrote to the newspapers were proverbially unbalanced.") too easy via social media. You get it: It's all hypocrisy. Keep calling balls and strikes, Bridget.

Me in 2012: "OMG ROMNEY MIGHT BEAT OBAMA! I MUST NOW THROW LOTS OF MONEY AT THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN!" Me in 2020: "I would so totally vote for Romney if the Republicans nominated him, I guess I have to vote for Biden even though I REALLY don't want to." Me in 2024: "Nope, not voting for either of these people. Writing someone in."

Such a great conversation, and very reassuring for us politically homeless types. As someone who has always been more on the left to be actually relieved at Trump winning says a lot about how far the left has gone. Yet, I am still not in any particular camp. I assume many people voted for the lesser of two evils, or the fear of where the current ideology was going. It's no coincidence that European countries are also turning right, yet many of those voters will be historically left/liberal and most likely won't be on board with everything the right-wing parties stand for. People just want some sanity! I also think the terms themslves (right wing, left wing) are becoming obsolete. The left have done a very effective job at labelling anyone who isn't on board with some of their radical ideas as 'far right'. as if they have the moral high ground. But these terms are increasingly meaningless.
