Politics these days have become so divided and divisive that it’s become the norm to view the other side of the aisle as “the enemy”. People are being told to “pick a side” and that there’s no room for middle ground. We here at Phetasy believe that there are a lot more people in the middle than politicians and the media would have us believe.
We’re collecting stories from the ever growing number of people who are finding themselves Politically Homeless and posting them here on Substack. If you have moved from conservative to liberal, or liberal to conservative, if you feel you’ve stayed in the same place and your party has swerved drastically away from you, if you had a moment that awakened you to the insanity and hypocrisy on both sides, if you keep your mouth shut anytime a political topic comes up because you’re afraid your opinion will cause you to lose friends or your job, you’re not as alone as you might think.
Our goal is to shine a light on people’s earnest, individual experiences and show them they’re not alone.

Letter 101:
July 24, 2024
I'm a 49 year old woman, a pro-life Christian. I have five adopted children, I'm happily married 23 years. I hold two Master's degrees. Two of my children are African American, although my husband and I are Caucasian.
On some things, like gun control, we take a very liberal stance. In terms of civil liberties, moderately liberal. We believe in rights for everyone, although we do not believe in the indoctrination of homosexuality in our schools. We believe that people have the right to become trans if they want to, but we do not believe that's a child's decision. We believe that border security is important, but we also believe in treating humans like humans. We're very sympathetic to people crossing the border and we don't believe the majority are criminals. We both support minority rights and the police, so long as they are doing their job and not killing innocent people. We are staunchly pro-life. We also believe in women's rights. I have been both a working mother, and a stay-at-home mother. We teach our daughters they can do anything they want to do.
We don't fall into the category that Evangelical Christians are usually boxed into. We're not blind to Trump's machinations, and we've never voted for him. For over 15 years, we voted Democrat. That changed for me after Obama got out of office. I didn't vote for a president, nor did my husband. We voted Republican on a local level. Abortion had swung so far left, with them demanding abortion on demand at any stage. We believe abortion is wrong no matter what, but the fact that people are now arguing that you could have an abortion at 8 or 9 months is insanity to us. We can’t believe that the country is embracing that horrible and antiquated thought. So voting liberal is completely out of the question at this point.
But we also cannot sanction a man who is a reprehensible individual. I don't like to judge any other person because I don't have the right to do so. However, his actions and misogyny against women, his racist remarks, his anti-patriotic stands, his refusal to accept the Democratic process... All of these things make him a horrible candidate for us. We appreciate what he did for the pro-life movement, although he certainly does not appear to be actually pro-life. I agree with some of the economic decisions he has made, such as imposing tariffs on China. But I simply cannot stomach voting for him.
We are Christians, but not radical right. We just want to endorse a candidate who shares at least some of our values and beliefs. At this point we have to go very far left or very far right and we don't feel that either is a morally sound choice. We feel like we're in a political desert. It's gotten much worse than just voting for the less of the evil. If I go one way, I’m endorsing murder in the name of Rights and if I go the other way I'm endorsing an insane radical who is a narcissistic sociopath is really only out for himself.
We have prayed about this so many times. It just doesn't feel like there's any moderate candidate on either side who represents the majority of people. I don't know that many people on extreme left or extreme right. I think most people have just become so polarized that they keep voting for whatever they're given. I'm in shock that it's come to this point.
So we are some examples of the politically homeless. When my older children who can now vote look to me, I told them that I generally endorse Republicans on the state level, and I abstain from presidential voting as of right now. I honestly don't know what the right thing to do is. This is our story. We're so afraid that republicanism is lost to Trump and his racist backers that we may never have a good conservative again. And now that the radical left has gotten their lobbies in with every president, there's no good choice there either.
The media casts us all wrong. We don't fit into the mold they're trying to portray. We don't blindly follow any candidate. We think Biden did some good things. Even Trump, as horrible as he is, also did some good things. Such an impossible decision!
I would love to endorse a black female for president, but her values are completely different from mine. That's not because I'm racist and I'm obviously not anti woman. I'm a highly educated female who is raising a black daughter and a black son. I voted for Obama despite his abortion stance. But am I now expected to embrace a radical left point of view or be labeled a misogynist and a racist?
Honestly, I don't care what the world labels me. They have it all wrong. There just doesn't seem to be a right choice that I could look God in the face and tell him I did the right thing by voting. There's just no ethical decision for people like us. We feel like we're on a political island and I know there are many people who don't love the agenda that either party has set forth... Some people are liberally social but fiscally conservative or vice versa. What happened to a moderate candidate? These lobbyists have taken over and tell us what to think and we've never been good at following certain news sources. We try to make our own decisions, as objectively as possible. I don't vote for someone just because they throw out the name Jesus. Your actions have to back at least some of that up.
I hope this helps you to understand at least a little bit more about some of us out here who feel politically homeless. And I'm not looking forward to election time. People on my social media timelines are so divisive on both sides and I just keep snoozing people left and right because I don't want to think about it.
Thank you for your time
