Another Politically Homeless American
Real people, real letters, real problems, no solutions.
Politics these days have become so divided and divisive that it’s become the norm to view the other side of the aisle as “the enemy”. People are being told to “pick a side” and that there’s no room for middle ground. We here at Phetasy believe that there are a lot more people in the middle than politicians and the media would have us believe.
We’re collecting stories from the ever growing number of people who are finding themselves Politically Homeless and posting them here on Substack. If you have moved from conservative to liberal, or liberal to conservative, if you feel you’ve stayed in the same place and your party has swerved drastically away from you, if you had a moment that awakened you to the insanity and hypocrisy on both sides, if you keep your mouth shut anytime a political topic comes up because you’re afraid your opinion will cause you to lose friends or your job, you’re not as alone as you might think.
Our goal is to shine a light on people’s earnest, individual experiences and show them they’re not alone.
Some letters have been edited for clarity and brevity. If you’re politically homeless and would like to share your story, please email us at iampoliticallyhomeless@gmail.com. All submissions will remain anonymous.
Letter 65:
November 8, 2023
Yes, I AM politically homeless. Since I could vote I was Republican, mostly to vote for the less extreme conservative. My dad was hardcore republican and after being in college, I became more "liberal"--environmental views, anti-racist, questioning authority. During G. W. Bush I switched to Independent mostly due to the views of Cheney and Rumsfeld.
Now I always thought I was moderate and slightly left. But still had "right leaning" views. I hunt and have guns but feel we need stronger gun background checks. My liberal friends were surprised that I got a CCW permit.
I was disgusted with both Trump and Clinton. After 2016 I thought "Am I a Liberal?". then during the 2020 election I felt we needed a change. I ignorantly looked at E. Warren. But then when i decided she was like a soccer Mom and my Boston democrat friend said she was the worst they could have elected, I came to my senses. I started to see how the far left were pontificating their twisted views. I was more upset with the far right-racist, religious side of the Republican party.
Now I cannot tell my liberal friends that I was over Covid (I felt a lot of it was media hype) and that Socialism is evil. I cannot tell my conservative friends that I think every child and senior citizen should have free health care (if they are unable to obtain it).
if our only choices are Biden and Trump we are headed towards Idiocracy. I agree that there is room for a middle ground. I think the majority of both Democrats and Republicans are sensible and they would join a third party (maybe more Republicans). I have only 2 friends that I can be honest about my political views. The rest of my friends would be abhorred that I don't totally agree with them. I do not post anything political on social media and am very careful about what I say in public.
Arrg!! What to do? Phetasy's podcasts are now something I look forward to.

You’re not alone! There must be more than 65 of us out there. I have 1 friend in real life I can have nuanced conversations and disagreements with. Most friends and family are captured by mind viruses. Idiocracy, indeed. Glad I found this site. - Politically Homeless #49
