Greetings from the Phetaverse!
We had our first of hopefully many Politically Homeless livestreams (and if you missed it, it’s still available for subscribers). In the future, I’ll be inviting guests and talking about the many Letters from the Politically Homeless that we receive and publish here at Substack. I’ll also be having friends like Steve Krakauer come through to discuss their thoughts. He just wrote a great piece “I don’t care who wins” on his Fourth Watch Substack that made everyone mad. Steve is a kindred spirit.
It was great to hear from many of you during the livestream and take your questions. It’s easy to forget that I’m not screaming into the void if I don’t regularly connect with you, which is why I’m inspired to do more community activities. The lady members and I do workouts Monday-Friday at noon CT and I’ve made some true friends that way (if you’re a female susbriber interested in joining our zoom workouts, please respond to this newsletter!) The Politically Homeless livestreams will be monthly to start and will increase as we enter the madness of 2024 electile dysfunction.
We are also starting a Phetasy Book Club at last! Our first book is one I’ve been wanting to read and keeps popping in my head: Bowling Alone. Robert Putnam wrote this book over twenty years ago about the decline of social capital in American society. Through the rise of social media, Covid, and the ability to work from home, it seems we are even more and more atomized every year. Perhaps we are just in the lonely wasteland of isolation that is priming us for inevitable existence in the metaverse, but I’m curious to see how Putman’s book holds up—and what trends he couldn’t have possibly have predicted.
I know one of the constant refrains I hear is “thank you for making me feel like I’m not alone.” If my content achieves anything at all, I hope it is that. My main reason for doing any of this is connection. Who knows, maybe I’ll be inspired to join a bowling league.

I read Putnam’s book 20 years ago. You won’t be disappointed. He was (is?) a lefty but he was honest enough to credit church with providing some solid connections to people. Anyway, your dumpster fires get me through my workouts. Thank you.
