Greetings from the Phetaverse!
One of my favorite slogans in recovery is, “You can’t stay clean from yesterday’s shower.” In his weekly newsletter, James Clear has a quote that encapsulates this idea. He says:
"One good day does not mean you can coast tomorrow. You never have it fully licked. Making good choices is an endless process. Many areas of life that we value most—our relationships, our fitness, our craft—require a continual commitment.”
Anyone with kids already knows this, but they’re perfect reflections of our worst habits and our best qualities. My daughter is already reaching for my phone and of course, why wouldn’t she? Mommy is always looking at it. It must be interesting. (It’s also just interesting from a design perspective. Kids love screens.) But her new fixation with my phone is a painful reminder of mine. A daily bad habit that I’m feeding.
I tend to spend more time scrolling when I’m invested in things I have no power over. The midterms. The chaos on Twitter with its new mercurial owner. The protests in Iran. It’s all so fascinating and feels so important. Yet, at the same time—it’s also a distraction from my own life, my family, my community, and my company. Another way to procrastinate.
There are books to be written. Newsletters to finish. Baby food to be pureed. Hugs to be given. Despite my desire to help the people of Iran, for example, I’m mostly powerless to affect anything other than what’s right in this room. My husband, my dog, my daughter, myself. These are the relationships I value the most and they deserve the one thing continual commitment requires—my attention.
