Greetings from the Phetaverse!
It’s about the time when I start reflecting on the end of the year and getting ready to set intentions and goals for the next one. I’ll be writing more about the exact process I go through and the questions I ask myself in a newsletter closer to the New Year—but this is when I start allowing the questions to percolate in my heart and mind.
One question I’ve been thinking about: What advice would I have given myself at the beginning of last year?
December of 2021 I was starting to feel great in my pregnancy. The sickness was passing but it was replaced by a new anxiety, wondering if this little being was okay. As it became more apparent this pregnancy was going to stick, I was starting to freak out about how I was going to juggle being a mom and being a content creator. How would I lose the baby weight? How would I finish a book? How could I grow the podcast? And on and on.
Looking back on all those fears and anxieties, the advice I would have given myself is, “Trust the process.” The making of the baby was largely out of my hands. I had to eat well and drink water but for the most part, I just had to trust the miraculous process that was unfolding. My body was built to make a whole entire human and I had to trust that.
This was something I had to learn in sobriety. When I got sober, I wanted to have a year of sobriety, and all the things that come with it, in a month. We live in a culture of instant gratification. There isn’t much emphasis placed on patience and dogged consistency and the magic that occurs when we show up, day after day.
Think of how many things require trusting the process to be successful—dieting, exercising, relationships, raising a child, taking care of a dog, working on a new skill, learning a language, meditating.
James Clear has a great quote, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
You can easily give up on a goal—but systems offer clarity, you can tweak them and evaluate what is working and what isn’t. It’s good to have goals, but if I have great systems in place, all I have to do is keep showing up and trust the process.
