Phetasy News - There's No There There
Never See An Uggo Again, Mary Harrington Is Against Progress, Making Friends Is Hard, A Politically Homeless Awakening of Sorts, The Subscriber Wars: A Dispatch From the Trenches & New Merch!
Greetings from the Phetaverse!
I saw daffodils blooming on my evening walk—a reminder that Spring has sprung despite the unusually cold weather we have had this entire winter in Southern California. It’s one of my favorite times of year because not only do we get more light thanks to the stupidity of daylight savings, but we get signs of life bursting forth all around us.
Lately I’ve been so caught up in the day-to-day, I’ve forgotten to stop and smell the roses or notice the daffodils or “touch grass” as the kids these days say. And it isn’t because I’ve been Very Online—I have just been Very Busy—the state of modern life. Doesn’t it feel like it’s all going so fast? Or maybe it’s just me, chasing…something…I’m not sure what.
Ever ambitious and always consumed with checking the boxes and attaining those goals, I’m reminded of my first sponsor in recovery saying, “There’s no there there.” Chasing “there” is like chasing the horizon. You can see it and move towards it and never arrive.
It’s funny how the message you need to hear will often appear two or three times in a day. Today from from The Daily Stoic reading: “Seriously—what you take for granted, others wouldn’t even think to dream of.” And James Clear quoting Epicurus,“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”
Gratitude. Faith. Service. Being present in the moment. Friendship. Family. Love. This is what makes a life worthwhile. And this is what I’ve been taking for granted—until the sight of the daffodils slowed me down and reminded me that we can be born anew in every moment.
