Newsom does seem to be kind of Teflon coated, like Trump. He has managed to become and remain the governor of one of the most consequential states in the country. The difference is, he is not real the way Trump is real. Trump could not escape himself if he tried (Covfefe!). Newsom, on the other hand, seems to be trying out different personas to see what might stick. None of them have so far, which does not mean he can't get himself elected. This last election was what Peggy Noonan of the WSJ called a "path election." Neither candidate was hugely attractive to the average person, so people voted for a path rather than a person. I think the country chose correctly. When Newsom runs in 2028, Republicans are going to need a candidate who can handle him (assuming he wins the nomination, which I think is likely).
