Sydney Sweeney currently has me obsessed with beauty—not just beauty standards—but the beauty that we can find everywhere, in nature, in art, in architecture. I’m traveling and staying with family and it’s always such a joy to see the care people put into their homes and yards. Beauty. Everywhere.
We talked about it during our writers’ meetings this week, and even considered it as the topic of Real America.
I asked Kevin Ryan to include the three most beautiful songs from his week.
“Tell me I never knew that” by Caroline had been floating around for a bit before it was released on what might be the album of the year, a weird acoustic-electronic spaz session. The lyrics are serious, and they hit like a hammer, but I think what she’s saying is, “Even when life is shitty, it’s beautiful.”
“Comfy in Nautica” by Panda Bear - We lost Brian Wilson this year, so it’s time to double down on Noah Lennox, the Beach-Boy-voiced lovable weirdo who made his name as the drummer of Animal Collective. “Comfy in Nautica” appeared on Person Pitch (2007), and everything he’s done since then basically sounds the same, but hey, it works. Perfect music for summertime.
“Day by Day” by Eddie Kendricks. Fans of Lil Wayne will recognize that intro, one of the many samples taken from People…Hold On, the defiant and wild second solo album by The Temptations frontman. This track always is a great addition to your life’s soundtrack: It always makes your day brighter, brings the people around you closer.
